MEHMET ALİ MERİÇ

Born in a seaside residence in Kuzguncuk, İstanbul to the smell of iodin e of the sea and jessamine and hyacinth in the garden in 1946, he is said to have grown as the naughty c hild of a hilariously tranquil environment.  The sound was of the sea solely and of steamers and ships passing by from time to time.  Just opposite the residence stood Ortaköy mosque.  His first painting was of that mosque.  Then, he always drew steamers and ships.  Beautiful was the time then; no TV, no computer….  He was five when first radio arrived home t he first time.  He was a child like all others running, playing and when tired colunting clouds, drawing pictures, and doing things alike.

Time ran and dad took him to  Halil Dikmen, the instructor and also the  director of Painting and Plastic Arts Department of the Academy of Fine Arts.  His first lessons were from him and then Şükrü Balaban and Kemal Zeren became his masters who entrusted him the key to the studio so that he could make use of the whole place.  He was educated to internalise both the spirit and craftmanship of art.

He dropped Galatasaray Higt School in 1965 when he started working for ‘Sumerbank Yıldız Porcelain ‘ factory as a designer where he discovered the charm of fire, mud and glaze.  Two years he was there.  Then, following the army service, he set up his studio with a friend where they started     producing designed delftware through serigraphic printing technique.  That strive turned into produ cing ceramics (china) in time.  Standard production left its place to single copy production.

He was made to open his first exhibitio n in Istanbul.  ‘Her was made’ as he loves m aking pictures but not selling them.  Alas…..1983,84,85……2007, 43 individual exhibitions in İstanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Mersin and Adana and a joint one in Germany.

The past 45 years in various disciplines hav e taught him to get acquainted with the material and use it and not to stick top opne discipline thematically and to work non-stop painting, ceramics, Sculpture, metal painting……
